Dr Paul Mathai started his career as a freelance GP and later found himself working as a junior doctor in the Department of Neurosurgery, MOSC, Kolenchery; which also happens to be his alma mater. He later took up a post graduation in Pharmacology from K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore and his first assignment after this was a stint in Abbott India Limited from 2015 to 2017; first as a Scientific Project Manager and then as a Medical Advisor. Then he joined Malabar Medical College as an Assistant Professor. This is where he found his true voice; loud and unapologetic. Dr Paul describes himself as an academician to the bone. He has, however, worked to turn Sree Anjaneya Medical Trust into a SIRO (Scientific and Industrial Research Organization). This was possible by successfully applying for certification from the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research). This move has enabled potential researchers from each and every organization coming under Sree Anjaneya Medical Trust to apply for research grants from central government agencies (such as ICMR) to conduct whatever research they want. He is currently the Principal Investigator of a global clinical trial that is awaiting HMSC clearance from ICMR, Delhi. His teaching methods have been described as effective; albeit abrasive.
